The Zukowski Warning: How Council’s Chronic Incompetence Chains Us to Failure

The fallout from the Zukowski case isn’t just a localized failure; it is a glaring red siren warning us about the rot at the heart of our city’s governance. This debacle is the definitive blueprint of what happens when a city council operates without a shred of forensic grit, curiosity, or basic competence. It is a textbook example of a public oversight board completely asleep at the wheel while the Administration steers the ship into a ditch.

Yet, election after election, we watch the exact same movie. We head to the ballot box and re-elect the same comfortable group of career counselors, expecting a different result.

The harsh reality is that many of these incumbents simply lack the professional skill sets required to do the job. They do not know how to independently audit a budget, they cannot decipher complex administrative data, and they completely lack the inquisitive instinct to cross-examine city staff. Instead of acting as a fierce line of defense for the taxpayer, they function as a glorified rubber stamp—nodding along to whatever glossy presentation the Administration puts in front of them because they lack the capacity to challenge it.

This total absence of friction creates a dangerous illusion. When there is no public debate, no sharp questioning, and no accountability on the floor, the public assumes everything is running smoothly. The Administration controls the narrative, the status quo remains unchallenged, and these same unskilled politicians get a free pass back into office time and time again.

We have to stop treating council seats like lifetime achievement awards or social clubs. If we keep electing people who lack the backbone and the brainpower to interrogate decisions, we will keep getting the same disastrous outcomes. It’s time to demand forensic leadership, or get used to paying the price for their incompetence.
